Hello fellow adventurers,

I'm thrilled to share my latest project — renovating an off-grid, self-sufficient mountain hut, or rustico, in the Blenio Valley, Switzerland. As an entrepreneur who values freedom and connection with nature, I've always dreamed of having a place where I can truly unplug and escape the hectic pace of everyday life.

Nicknamed the Valley of the Sun, the Blenio Valley is a paradise for nature lovers to discover. In summer, the area lends itself to beautiful hiking and mountain bike excursions, surrounded by breathtaking landscapes. During the winter season, skiing and sledding slopes seem geared specifically for families. Or follow the snowy cross-country skiing trails on the plains.

Blenio Valley is a paradise for nature lovers to discover.

The rich history of the Valley lives on in the Napoleonic militia parades, in the rooms of small and austere museums, in the ruins of the Serravalle Castle, and in the halls of the Cima Norma factory where the ancient art of chocolate making has given way to the aromas and flavors of the region.

This project is not only a way for me to fulfil that dream, but also a way to create a unique retreat for like-minded individuals who want to experience the beauty of the southern Swiss Alps in a sustainable, off-grid environment.

The Place

The rustico I'm renovating sits in an incredible location, surrounded by stunning natural beauty and panoramic views of the Alps and the highest peak of my Heimat: the Rheinwaldhorn (Italian: Adula), the highest point in the Swiss canton of Ticino at 3,402 metres above sea level.

The Rheinwaldhorn
The Rheinwaldhorn (Italian: Adula) is the highest point in the Swiss canton of Ticino at 3,402 metres above sea level. It lies on the border between the cantons of Graubünden and Ticino, in the Adula massif, part of the St. Gotthard massif of the Lepontine Alps in southern Switzerland.

There is no single definition for the term heimat. It describes a spatial and social unit of medium range, wherein the individual is able to experience safety and the reliability of its existence — as well as a place of deeper trust.

The hut has been abandoned for some time and requires significant renovations to make it habitable again. It used to be a farm belonging to my mother's family for cows on the mountain pasture during the warmer months. My vision is to transform it into a comfortable and welcoming retreat that offers all the comforts of home while still being entirely off-grid and self-sufficient.

The Plan

The renovation will be a challenge, but I'm excited to take it on. I love projects, you know. I'll be working with a team of local craftsmen and engineers to ensure the hut is structurally sound and able to withstand the harsh mountain weather.

We'll be incorporating sustainable building materials and eco-friendly technologies — solar panels, rainwater collection systems — to make the hut as energy-efficient as possible. To minimize environmental impact, we'll implement a composting toilet and a natural garden for fresh organic produce.

The Why

My hope for this project is to create a unique, off-grid experience that offers a chance to disconnect from the busy pace of life and reconnect with nature. I believe this type of retreat is essential for promoting overall wellness and mental health, and I'm excited to share it with others who share my passion for adventure and sustainable living.

Looking forward to sharing more updates as the renovation continues.

Thank you for joining me on this exciting journey.
